Tomohon, Indonesia, 5 October 2018
On the afternoon of September 27, 2018 a deadly earthquake followed by a tsunami hit Palu – Indonesia. Villages were wiped away, and there are many victims. Families elsewhere are waiting in dispare for news, not being able to contact their relatives in Palu. Those who survived are now facing many difficulties. They run short of foods and drinks. Many institutions and non-governmental organizations try their best to help the people, not only by rescuing the victims that are stucked under the collapsed buildings, but also by providing them with foods and drinks.
Solidarity Don Bosco Schools
Two days after the incident, the family of Frater Don Bosco Junior High School in Tomohon, teachers, staffs and all the students decided to show their solidarity by conducting a charity activity. Every student and teacher brought some basic needs such as rice, nooddles, and drinks. These were given to the social-economic department of the Diocese of Manado to be donated to the victims. When asked about the charity event, one of the teachers stated that “by organizing this, the school wants to enable the students, teachers and staff to be solidary with those who are in need. And also in our prayers, we are always with them”.
The same charity activity is also done by other schools under the supervision of the Don Bosco Foundation of Manado. All schools from Kindergarten to High School level were asked to donate foods and drinks for the victims in Palu and its surroundings. The donations will be delivered to the parish church of Palu and also to the community of the Brothers CMM near the church. From there it will be provided to the people in the parish and near the brothers.
