Cleanup event of Timor Leste Ambassadors WWB
On February 18, 2023, the Ambassadors of Worldwide Brotherhood (WWB) in Timor Leste organized a cleanup event in one of the most famous tourist attractions in the capital city, the Cristo Rei area of Dili. The 27-meter-tall Christ statue was erected in 1996 to symbolize the then 27 provinces of Indonesia during the occupation period, attracting many visitors engaging in spiritual and physical activities. However, the site has been plagued with litter, which is a cause of concern for the group. The purpose of the cleanup campaign was to promote a healthier environment in Dili, including Timor Leste’s tourist regions.
According to WWB’s Timor Leste coordinator, Mr. Carlito Sousa, the initiative aimed to educate people on proper garbage disposal methods and to contribute to the country’s progress. Sister Aida Fernandes, SCMM, also a member of the group, expressed her hope that the younger generation would learn to care for their surroundings by disposing of plastics and garbage correctly, reflecting Pope Francis’ call to preserve our common home and seek sustainable development.
The Ambassadors WWB emphasized that Timor Leste is everyone’s home and that it is everyone’s responsibility to maintain a clean and healthy environment. The group highlighted the importance of proper waste disposal in maintaining a fresh and healthy environment.
The cleanup drive received an excellent response from all AWWB members, including Brothers CMM and Sisters SCMM, who joined hands in the effort. The group extended their charitable activities by visiting sick people at the National Hospital HNG in Dili.
