Tomohon, Indonesia, 6 October 2018.
Already in 2008, the General Chapter members discussed about the development of communication from the Brothers CMM towards other people in the world. They wanted the Congregation to become more visible, bearing witness to our stance of Mercy and Brotherhood and showing what it means as Brothers CMM to live a Christian life in community.
Following these goals, the General Board of Brothers CMM, through their international communication office, invited 13 brothers from Indonesia, Kenya, Tanzania, Timor Leste, Namibia, and Brazil in Panti Semadi – Tomohon, Indonesia for a an International Communication Training (ICT) bearing the theme: “External Communication of CMM in Magazine and Website”.
Provincial Board Backing
On Monday 1 October 2018, Brother Alfons Seran (member of the Provincial Board Indonesia) welcomed the participants to Panti Semadi on behalf of the Provincial Board – Indonesia. He wished them well during their stay and promised them their support and prayers during their training.
Brother Rofinus Banunaek (member of the General Board) and Ms. Nathalie Bastiaansen from the CMM international communication office gave the participants the overview for the training. The training was to address the theological, spiritual and pastoral dimension of communication, a Biblical framework of communication, the story we want to share, effective writing skills, styles of writing, the use of images, social media, and video making.
In her opening words, Ms. Nathalie gladdened me, when she started by saying: “Sometimes when I ask brothers to contribute to our website or the magazine, they say: ‘Well, nothing has happened around here of late, and I don’t know what to write about’.” For sure this words sounded alarm and awaked me with other participants I guess! While listening keenly to her speech it ignited some fire in my heart strongly, and I heard something telling me: “Augustine; you have not done enough in this area yet; please start from this moment and do something”.
Effect of our ICT
The CMM International Communication Training (ICT) addresses our needs of communication as a Congregation, improves our skills and also enhances the art and knowledge of writing articles and the use of media for the CMM website and Magazine.
I’m fascinated by our facilitators Br. Rofinus, Ms. Nathalie, Ms. Mascha, and Ms. Maria Julyani. I hope at the end of this training to be enriched more and more on my writing skills and the art of communication. In this training I am not only learning about the art of writing but also about making good pictures and how to use them to illustrate stories.
Eyeing the future
Meanwhile I feel that this training could be important to be offered to more brothers in the future, not only to gain knowledge on international communication but also to enrich their understanding of communication as a panacea to our needs in the Congregation.
The training is very good since it offers an opportunity for the Brothers CMM to be trained in their own context, as they address their needs in communication. This will make other people to understand more who the Brothers of Our Lady Mother of Mercy are. The course also offers an opportunity to exchange some cultural experiences from different countries through our sharing. This will trickle down effect to enhance our Brotherhood and Mercy and internationalization.
