The construction and development of St. Mary’s Skills Training Centre is still ongoing. Much has already been achieved! The brothers in Zambia are grateful for the support they received from the general board of Brothers CMM and from generous donors. This support has played an important role in what has been achieved so far.
We would like to thank all donors once again for their unwavering support and for their belief in our mission. Below you can read about the progress of the project. However, we are not there yet, so we could really use some more help.
Support
Will you support us? Your contribution is very welcome, to IBAN: NL60ABNA 0522439055, in the name of ‘Fraters CMM Missieprocuur’ (BIC: ABNANL2A), stating ‘Training Centre Kawambwa’.
Students
As of the latest academic term, the training centre is home to a total of 30 students and still more are coming. The 30 students are distributed across the following departments as follows: 15 students in metal fabrication; 9 students in the carpentry section; 6 students in bricklaying. This distribution reflects the demand for each program. The brothers have focused on ensuring that the students are well-equipped with both the practical and theoretical knowledge necessary for success in these technical fields.
Staff
To support the students effectively, there are 9 teachers and 3 non-teaching staff members. The teachers’ responsibilities extend beyond the core technical courses and include the instruction of additional subjects aimed at broadening the students’ skills and knowledge. These include English language and communication skills, technical drawing, mathematics, entrepreneurship, and computer skills. Each of these subjects is vital in preparing the students for the workforce. The teaching staff shows great commitment in their work. Their dedication to delivering a high standard of education is pivotal in the success of the students.
Recommendations by TEVETA
The need for good infrastructure and expansion remains a key focus of the centre. During a visit of TEVETA (Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority) last year, they provided important recommendations that have guided the brothers’ efforts for growth and development.
Among other, TEVETA recommended the establishment of a dedicated store and booths for the metal fabrication department. This would provide a safe and efficient workspace for the students. Despite limited financial resources, the school staff is actively working towards creating this facility. The progress might be slow, but they are determined to address this need, understanding the importance of a specialized space for the students’ learning and safety.
Challenges
The primary challenge at this time is financial constraints. Many of the improvements and infrastructure projects are currently on hold or have been delayed due to the lack of sufficient funds. Yet, the brothers are hopeful that with additional support, they will overcome these challenges and that they can further develop the training skills programs to meet the needs of the community and the nation at large.
